OMOP-CDM Data Warehouses to Foster Research to Improve Patient Outcomes
In this article, we discuss the significance of OHDSI, OMOP, and EHDEN in improving healthcare through data standardization and efficient analysis. We detail the advantages of OMOP CDM data warehouses for hospitals and showcase how MirrorHealth contributes to implementing these data warehouses.
OMOP, OHDSI, EHDEN – What are they?
What is OHDSI?
The Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI, pronounced "Odyssey") program is a multi-stakeholder, interdisciplinary open-science community with the goal of improving healthcare. Through its open-source software portfolio and methods for data standardization and analysis, it enables analytics on substantial amounts of clinical data.
What is OMOP?
The Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) Common Data Model (CDM) is an open community data standard, developed by OHDSI. It is designed to standardize the structure and content of observational data to produce reliable evidence efficiently.
What is EHDEN?
EHDEN is the European Health Data & Evidence Network, a federated data network launched to enable international large-scale research to generate real-world evidence (RWE) from real-world data (RWD), working hand-in-hand with OHDSI.
Collaboration as a Research Catalyzer
With most health data being held in unstructured formats (e.g., Electronic Health Records) or in structured format but in different databases, the data becomes difficult to reuse for research. Hospital data gets extracted, processed, and structured by MirrorHealth in the standardized OMOP format to create Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) data warehouses.
Data Quality and Transparency
MirrorHealth guarantees data quality through various automated and manual checks. We allow hospitals to assess data quality through:
- Data quality reports: Providing background and transparency on quality assurance protocols.
- Validation dashboards: Giving a highly detailed assessment of all extracted data from (un)structured files.
- Source analysis: Providing an overview on data sources and population of the OMOP database.
- Data dictionaries: Indicating which proxies are used for each variable.
Advantages of Harmonized Data Warehousing
As a hospital, the advantages of having an OMOP CDM data warehouse with standardized observational health data are numerous:
-
1. Clinical Insights
Help to gain valuable clinical insights into the quality of care and effectiveness of treatments.
-
2. Cost Reduction
Reduce healthcare costs through information gained from medical and economic analyses.
-
3. Benchmarking & Collaboration
Benchmarking becomes significantly easier, as well as publications in collaboration with other hospitals.
-
4. Clinical Trial Streamlining
Patient recruitment for clinical trials gets streamlined and can speed up for a higher ROI.
MirrorHealth as Your Partner
MirrorHealth helps hospitals unlock clinical data and set up databases according to OMOP Common Data Model standards. Our federated approach ensures all data remains under the custody of the hospital, maintaining full control while enabling high-impact research.
